Graphite Works on Paper
In June of 2023, I traveled to a small town on the coast of Denmark. Settling into a minimal summer house by the sea, I began work on a new body of work titled Essence of Place. Quiet days spent in this land of light opened up an expanded relationship to place and time.
Exploring nature and capturing the essence of places is a journey of discovery that transcends mere observation. It is about immersing oneself in the natural world—feeling the rhythms of the environment, and understanding the unique characteristics that define each location. Through this exploration, I gain a deeper appreciation for the beauty and diversity of our planet, fostering a connection that inspires both awe and responsibility.
The materials I use are water-soluble graphite on watercolor paper. The quality of this material allows for a gestrual movement between precise mark-making and the fluidity of water, conveying both the sharp detail and the flowing motion of open observation. The graphite holds a rich, warm, greasy black quality, creating a safe and inviting haven to walk into and explore memory imprints beyond place and time.
The artwork is available in two formats:
Original Works — Water-soluble graphite on heavyweight watercolor paper
Archival Digital Prints — High-resolution photographs printed on archival paper
